Masseria Potenti: Modern living in a Historic Farmhouse in Puglia
Masseria Potenti is the dream of a family from Puglia, in Southern Italy, who once decided to relocate to Milan and spend long summers at their family farmhouse on the outskirts of Manduria, a village in the heart of the Salento region.
Masseria Potenti is the story of a Pugliese family who revived a 16th-century traditional farmhouse to introduce the culture and cuisine of the Salento region to the world.
After decades of enjoying summers with family and friends at their farmhouse in Puglia, the family decided to reconnect with their roots by creating Masseria Potenti. They aimed to introduce the Puglian culture to the world through local farming and traditional cuisine in a laid-back environment at their farmhouse. The family wanted to share their pride in what it means to be Pugliese with their guests, allowing them to experience the rich history and culinary heritage of the Salento region. This is how their journey began to take shape in their native Puglia after 30 years of living in northern Italy.
THE STORY BEHIND MASSERIA POTENTI AND ITS PEOPLE
Today, Masseria Potenti is centered around the personal stories of Maria Grazia and Paolo, along with their children Chiara and Walter. In 2003, the Tommasino family acquired a 16th-century masseria, typical of the Puglia region and parts of Sicily. This was no ordinary property – it was a 130-hectare estate once owned by the influential Imperiali family. The historic significance of the farmhouse definitely adds to its uniqueness.
Situated in Manduria's countryside, amidst Primitivo vineyards, olive groves, and overlooking the Ionian Sea, Masseria Potenti distinguishes itself with its pristine whitewashed structures, Mediterranean sunlight, and natural surroundings.
Initially, the masseria was a private retreat for the Tommasino family, and only in recent years have they decided to start sharing it with visitors. Masseria Potenti opened its doors to revitalize regional agriculture using organic production from its land. Olive oil, wine, jams from centuries-old orchards, and preserved vegetables are the most characteristic flavors and produce of Puglia, grown at the masseria, following sustainable practices.
A few years later, the family's plan to convert parts of their farmhouse into a small hotel became a reality. Today, Masseria Potenti has evolved into an unparalleled destination featuring 23 accommodations for conscious travelers eager to explore Salento and its rich culinary traditions.
AN ODE TO MODERN MINIMALISM AND RUSTIC HOSPITALITY
Masseria Potenti encourages slowing down and appreciating life’s simple pleasures with ease and joy. The entire property, both indoors and outdoors, is built with whitewashed local stone, evoking a perpetual summertime atmosphere that invites barefoot living year-round.
The farmhouse, carefully renovated while preserving its original 16th-century fortified structure, stands out for its rustic yet stylish design, fused with modern minimalism. This creates a perfect harmony of authenticity and comfort.
Stepping into Masseria Potenti feels like traveling back in time through its vast central courtyard surrounded by high walls and flanked by buildings on two sides. These structures include the family's home and the guest rooms, historically farmers’ houses, stables, and barns.
Masseria Potenti also celebrates Puglian culinary tradition. Maria Grazia and her team skillfully prepare traditional recipes with a modern and personal touch. Maria Grazia aims to surprise guests’ palates by awakening their senses with unique flavors, colors, aromas, and textures.
Enjoying a homemade meal at the masseria amid the Pugliese countryside is an invitation to experience the land’s rich history. After all, food lies at the heart of Puglia’s captivating charm.
WHY TRAVELERS SHOULD STAY IN A TRADITIONAL MASSERIA
Today, many travelers prefer accommodations that are eco-conscious and committed to protecting the area's natural beauty. A masseria seeks to preserve the most authentic aspects of the Pugliese culture.
Sustainability and self-sufficiency are part of the essence of Masseria Potenti. Every food-related choice offered to guests is either homegrown in the extensive gardens or sourced from nearby farmers with whom they have long-standing relationships. Additional sustainable practices are also in place to manage their environmental footprint efficiently, including reducing energy and water usage, while minimizing waste and recycling whenever possible.
The surroundings of Masseria Potenti feature some of Puglia’s most iconic sites. And the Tommasino family aims to preserve and thoughtfully promote their beloved homeland to conscious travelers.
For visitors interested not only in Puglia’s natural beauty but also its cultural heritage, nearby attractions include the historic Baroque city of Lecce, Ostuni with its whitewashed old town, the tranquil city of Manduria, the lesser-known elegance of Martina Franca, and Grottaglie, renowned for its traditional ceramics.
