THE STORY BEHIND BELLAMAR CADAQUÉS

Bellamar Cadaqués offers more than just private boat trips for those wishing to explore the Empordà region, its stunning beaches, and coves. Eduard’s project is deeply rooted in tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage.

The boat Bellamar was handcrafted in 1931 by a local Cadaqués wood boat maker named Joan Nadal. Known for their high quality, about 30 sailboats built by Joan still exist today. Originally, Bellamar was a leisure fishing boat for a family in Cadaqués, equipped only with a lateen sail. In the 1950s, the addition of a small motor allowed Bellamar to take the first tours around Cap de Creus for visitors.

In the 1990s, classic boat builder Fransesc Despuig Carreres, also from Cadaqués, restored Bellamar. But it wasn’t until 2022 that Eduard and Joel Despuig, son of Francesc Despuig, acquired the boat to revive the tradition of sailing around Cap de Creus in a classic wooden lateen sailboat.

THE UNIQUENESS OF CAP DE CREUS AND CADAQUÉS

Situated in the Alt Empordà region, Cap de Creus is located on the easternmost edge of the Iberian Peninsula and marks the last foothill of the Pyrenees. It is the first natural park in Catalonia that covers both land and sea areas across eight municipalities, including Cadaqués.

The Cap de Creus Natural Park stands out for its diverse plant and animal life, as well as its unique geological features. Formed millions of years ago through intense heat and pressure, its dramatic geological formations are among the park’s most notable characteristics. The Tramuntana wind and sea erosion have shaped the rocks into extraordinary shapes, colors, and textures that once inspired Dalí’s famous artwork.

Besides its natural beauty, Cap de Creus also has a rich cultural heritage that adds extra charm to its scenic wildness. The Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery is an excellent example of Catalan Romanesque architecture.

Among its many interests, Cadaqués is known for its stunning, rugged coastline and distinctive white-walled houses capped off by Santa Maria’s Church. Its secluded setting, well-preserved old town, artistic tradition, and historical significance make it a landmark in the Empordà region for both locals and visitors.
